Experimental Psychology

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of experimental psychology and gain expertise on the human mind. Delve into various aspects of the mind, including psychological disorders and the impact of childhood attachments on the future. Through designing your own investigations, networking with experts, and exploring the ethics of human psychology experiments, you’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of this field.

You will be studying the brain, mind and behaviour, and in doing so you will find out all sorts of things about yourself and the social world around you, such as how you remember events and faces, how your brain works, how what happened to you as a child affects you now – even how you measure your own personality! You’ll find out the fascinating ways in which people interact and for how you yourself view the world. Dive into intriguing social topics, like why people believe in fake news and, and future-focused learning, including how we can help people with mental health problems. Our Experimental Psychology summer school is the perfect opportunity for aspiring psychologists and medical professionals to gain hands-on insight into life as a student studying psychology. Through our holistic approach to learning, students will be exposed to the detailed inner workings of the human mind.

We pride ourselves on our status as the world’s most international summer school, having welcomed students from over 175 countries since our foundation in 2005. This represents an invaluable opportunity for aspiring psychologists to gain access to a global network of like-minded peers. Ambitious learners will collaborate and communicate, working together to build their subject skills, but also create a lifelong network.

Students aged 16-18 will benefit from the most up to date research, encompassing a well-considered balance of theoretical and practical learning. They will develop a profound understanding of psychology by:

– Gaining a comprehensive overview of the subject of psychology

– Exploring the ethics of psychological research

– Analysing real-world case studies and experiments

– Collaborating on hands-on projects

– Drawing inspiration from a dynamic range of workshops, seminars and talks from experts

With Oxford Royale, no two days are the same - we will keep learning varied and include seminars, activities, self-tests, data analysis, case studies, demonstrations and research. These are all the kinds of learning activities you would do on an undergraduate psychology degree programme, aiming to prepare our students for a successful future.

Your assessment will take the form of two assignments that reflect what all psychologists do: one is a presentation to the rest of the class on the topic of identity and culture; the other is a written research report based on an experiment you have conducted yourself.  Thus, for both of these assignments, you’ll be practicing your psychological skills of communicating with the wider world.

– Foster an understanding of the diverse and dynamic nature of experimental psychology.
– Develop an overview of how experimental psychology is taught at university level.
– Foster knowledge of a range of fundamental psychological concepts including experimental design.
– Become familiar with several key theorists and classic studies.
– Build a balance between open-mindedness and critical evaluation of the material.
– Learn in a supportive atmosphere in which you can build confidence in expressing your opinions and ideas.
– Study topics beyond the level you have met in formal education and to discuss and approach topics from alternative and challenging perspectives.
– Think creatively about the study of psychological phenomena.
– Grow an understanding of how psychology can be applied in education, health and in everyday situations.

Our programme will open students up to a whole range of potential futures, whether this is continuing psychology in higher education, or discovering the different fields they could enter in the future.

A psychology degree is a great starting point for a career in both science and the arts, as it equips you with a range of skills and opens up opportunities with a range of employers. Jobs directly related to a psychology degree include:
Clinical psychologist
Counselling psychologist
Educational psychologist
Forensic psychologist
Health psychologist
Occupational psychologist
Psychological wellbeing practitioner
Sport and exercise psychologist
