Study Software and App Development with our Oxford Summer School 2020. Over the course of the exciting Software and App Development option, students will learn the basics of software programming and app development, increasingly fundamental to modern society, and take a big step toward skills that could one day guarantee employment.

Course Summary

Students who study this course will learn the skills needed to develop an iOS App from scratch. The course is dedicated to teaching Swift programming, which is a new powerful language for iOS. As with all of our programmes, students will have to complete and present a project at the end of the two weeks.

The project is in four stages:

  1. Problem solving using Swift.
  2. iOS App development using Swift in Xcode
  3. Testing and debugging.
  4. Report & Presentations during class.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will have:

  • Developed a fully functioning iOS app
  • Understood and learned the basics of Swift
  • Become proficient with syntax, object oriented principles, memory management, and functional concepts with Swift
  • Produced their own App Development project
  • Built on their teamwork and project skills
  • Used computers (Apple Mac) effectively to analyse, present and share data with their peers. They should be able to develop an appreciation of the utility and breadth of the field of computer science.

The Broadening Horizons Programme

This subject is part of the Broadening Horizons course at Oxford Royale Summer Schools’s Oxford summer school.

The Broadening Horizons course, for students aged 16 to 18, is suitable both for those who are trying to decide what to pursue in further education, and for those who simply want to learn about a variety of interesting subjects - 30+ study options are available!

Students choose two morning classes and one afternoon workshop to provide a diverse and stimulating curriculum that is tailored to their needs, allowing them to pursue areas of interest or try out something new. Students studying Broadening Horizons in Oxford get the chance to live and learn in a college of the University of Oxford or in our 17th-century manor house, Yarnton Manor.
