Lady Margaret Hall

Located on the banks of the River Cherwell and well known for its elegant gardens, Lady Margaret Hall is a modern college (founded in 1878) in incredible surroundings.

About Lady Margaret Hall

Lady Margaret Hall (LMH to students) was founded in 1878 as the first women’s college in Oxford, and is one of the University’s younger colleges. It started accepting male students in 1979.

The College is set on the River Cherwell and is well known for its elegant gardens. The famous English architect Giles Gilbert Scott designed the college’s Byzantine-style chapel.

LMH is beautifully situated on Norham Gardens, a short walk from Oxford City Centre. It has spacious grounds and gardens, and is situated adjacent to the University Parks.

Accommodation details

Students will be accommodated in single or twin rooms which are typical student bedrooms – please note that we are unable to accept requests for particular room types. Some bedrooms are fitted with en suite bathrooms; however, for other bedrooms, bathrooms are shared. Male and female students will be separated by corridor and/or staircases.

A three-course dinner is provided daily in the College dining hall. Students can also make use of a traditional common room and beautiful gardens.

Safety and security on campus

In the college students are overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who very often are current members of the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge.

The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss university applications.

Each campus has a few members of residential staff who live in the college throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.
