Tutorial 1: Rise of a Paradigm (1 - 1.5 hours)

This tutorial will begin with a discussion of the most iconic example of Greek architectural genius: the Greek Temple. It will explore the different architectural elements of temples and how these differed across the three orders, as well as the methods used by architects to create these buildings of immense beauty.

Tutorial 2: Outside the Temple (1 - 1.5 hours)

Greek religious architecture was not confined to temples. Building on the knowledge of the Greek Temple acquired during the previous tutorial, this tutorial takes a look at a range of other religious structures. These buildings, constructed for worship, were often found within sanctuaries, and we shall consider a few sanctuary case studies in detail.

Tutorial 3: Beautifying the Space of Life (1 - 1.5 hours)

This tutorial examines the structures that were at the heart of public life, both for religious and leisurely reasons. It will focus on four constructions in detail, namely: the theatron, the odeion, the stoa, and the gymnasion, exploring the purposes of each type of construction and the differences in architectural technique employed in each one.

Tutorial 4: Hidden Private and Decorative Public (1 - 1.5 hours)

The final tutorial of the course looks at architecture in both the private and public spheres. It will begin by exploring the private homes of the Greeks, before comparing these with the elaborately-decorated public buildings that were at the heart of civic life. The tutorial will end with an exploration of colour within Ancient Greek architecture – how it was made and how it was used.
