University College – A New Centre for Summer 2017!

We are delighted to announce a new centre for our 2017 Oxford Summer School!
With its iconic entrance on the High Street and illustrious portfolio of alumni, University College – affectionately known as “Univ” – is a real asset to our Oxford Summer School. The College’s accommodation will be hosting some of our 16-18 students, and we look forward to welcoming you to its historic buildings and colourful gardens this summer. In the meantime, here are a few of our favourite facts about Univ:

• The college was founded in 1249, and is consequently among the oldest of Oxford‘s constituent colleges.

• Logic Lane, a small cobbled street, runs right through the middle of the College. A picturesque covered bridge links the two halves of the College together.

• Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley attended Univ from 1810-1811, but was expelled after distributing The Necessity of Atheism around the University. These days he is considered an honoured alumnus, and a statue in his memory is available to view in its own memorial building.

• Univ has the longest grace of an Oxford college, a two-person call and response in Latin between a Scholar of the College and its Master or most senior Fellow.

• The College boasts an impressive list of alumni, including Clement Attlee, C.S. Lewis, Bill Clinton, and Stephen Hawking.
