Course Summary

Oxford Summer English enables students to improve their knowledge of English, both written and spoken, whilst living among the dreaming spires of Oxford, where J. R. R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and C.S. Lewis drew inspiration for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

As well as ensuring students make rapid progress in their written, read and spoken English, the Oxford Summer English course ensures that students experience England as much as they intensively learn its language. The enjoyable learning environment, inspirational city and like-minded individuals on the course enable students to improve their knowledge of the challenging language in a fun setting.

Why choose our EFL course?

Each year, 16 to 18-year-old students from dozens of nationalities come to Oxford Royale Academy to take our English as a Foreign Language (EFL) course, immersing themselves in our unique educational environment and taking their grasp of English to new heights.

Teachers on this English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programme are qualified according to British Council standards (CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent Level 5 TEFL qualification). ORA has its own English programme developed by EFL experts and maximises student learning in small class sizes.

Overcome the challenges of mastering English

Many students find that English can be a complex language to learn, with many bizarre idioms, exceptions to rules and unexpected pronunciations. Its idiosyncrasies mean that it can be difficult to get your knowledge of English beyond a basic level to a stage at which it becomes useful in either a general or academic setting. Our EFL courses are designed to provide an intensive yet enjoyable learning environment for students keen to progress their English skills, allowing them to tackle this challenging language in the company of like-minded students who are committed to improving their knowledge.

The benefits of the EFL course

The benefits of choosing to take an EFL course are numerous, and these benefits will stay with you throughout your academic life and beyond. The Oxford Royale Academy EFL course provides a particularly advantageous environment in which to develop your English skills, as it is set in the scholarly surroundings of the University of Oxford – home to true masters of the English language. Some of the reasons for which students choose to take our EFL course include:

Preparing for university – many of our 16-18 students are preparing to apply for an English-speaking university, and take an EFL course to boost their English skills in readiness for use in an academic context. If you’re about to apply to a UK university, our EFL course will help you hone your English to the standard expected by admissions tutors, teaching you valuable academic vocabulary along the way.

Improving communication – all our EFL students want to improve their communication in English, both written and spoken. Our EFL courses introduce you to the new vocabulary, grammar and syntax you need to ensure your English skills dazzle.

Rapid progress – one of the major benefits of our EFL course is that it allows you to progress your English very rapidly. With over 20 hours of English lessons a week, the intensive tuition and company of other students will mean you quickly absorb new knowledge.

Boost your confidence – speaking in a foreign language can be daunting, but the EFL course is designed to build your confidence with lots of opportunity for conversing in English.

Deepen your cultural knowledge – our EFL courses don’t just focus on studying. We also provide a full programme of extra-curricular activities and trips that teach you about different aspects of British culture and history. This deepens your understanding of the language by introducing you to the contexts in which it is spoken.

Students on Oxford Royale's Oxford summer courses will have the chance to live, dine and study in this stunning city, exploring all of its major sites and discovering its hidden secrets. Through both organised trips to key landmarks and free time in the evenings, students will become acquainted with all that Oxford has to offer.

As students walk the cobbled streets and gaze up at the spires, gargoyles and honey-coloured stone buildings, they will be walking in the footsteps of some of the most influential figures in history, including prime ministers, presidents, Nobel prize-winning scientists, authors and more.

Useful information for students & parents

Students will be accommodated in comfortable single or twin rooms depending on their allocated college - please contact our registrations team if you would like more information. Twin rooms are strictly between students of the same gender, and males/females are separated by corridoor and/or staircase. Accommodation is the standard accommodation for university undergraduates who study at the university, so students are able to get a flavour for what being an undergraduate at the university might be like. Bathrooms are typically shared between students of the same gender, though in some cases en-suite facilities are available.

Pastoral care & student welfare

The programme is overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who very often are current members of the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge. The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss university applications. Each campus has members of residential staff who live in the college throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.
