Vet Course Summary

The Veterinary Science Programme is aimed at students considering studying Veterinary Science or Veterinary Medicine at a UK university, or elsewhere. The course will offer a practical insight into studying Veterinary Science at higher education level, and pursuing a career as a vet, and will offer support to students thinking of making an application to study in the UK.

The course will feature a blend of theoretical study of veterinary science and animal anatomy, along with practical workshops, which teach you how to perform basic vet procedures. These enjoyable but informative workshops introduce you to the kind of tasks you’ll learn as a veterinary student, as well as giving you a flavour of the jobs you would one day do if you pursue a career in veterinary medicine. What’s more, you’ll spend some time considering, in debate with your fellow students, the ethical problems that can arise when studying or practising veterinary medicine.

This course is available to students aged 16-18; younger students may be interested in our new Introduction to Veterinary Science course for ages 13-15.

Why choose the Veterinary Science Programme?

Many animal enthusiasts dream of a career in Veterinary Medicine, but this career path requires more than just a love of pets. University courses in Veterinary subjects are challenging and competitive, and their admissions processes start earlier and consist of more components than your average science degree. Applicants are often required to sit an admissions test or assessment, and usually need to attend an interview prior to being offered a place, and are sometimes expected to have done some work experience in the field.

Our Veterinary Science Programme gives budding Veterinarians the chance to experience many aspects of studying the subject at higher education level, and offers information on applying to study this competitive subject at UK universities. The course will give students hands-on experience of some of the skills needed for veterinary training, which will both help them to decide whether this profession is right for them, and provide experiences that students can talk about in their personal statements and at interviews.

Is this course for me?

If you have an academic interest in Veterinary Science, and are considering pursuing the subject at a higher level, this is the course for you. Students on the Veterinary Science Programme will spend two weeks developing knowledge and skills crucial to studying this challenging but rewarding subject at university, and will get a taste of life in the veterinary profession.

Useful information for students & parents

Students will be accommodated in comfortable single or twin rooms depending on their allocated college - please contact our admissions team if you would like more information. Twin rooms are strictly between students of the same gender, and males/females are separated by corridor and/or staircase. Accommodation is the standard accommodation for university undergraduates who study at the university, so students are able to get a flavour for what being an undergraduate at the university might be like. Bathrooms are typically shared between students of the same gender, though in some cases en-suite facilities are available.

Pastoral care & student welfare

The programme is overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who very often are current members of the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge. The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss university applications. Each campus has members of residential staff who live in the college throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.
