Politics and Leadership Summer School in St Andrews

Through discussion and debate, our Politics and Leadership programmes give you the opportunity to develop and voice your own opinions, and to listen to those of others respectfully, even on controversial topics. You’ll improve your skills in areas from debating to public speaking, and you’ll hone your critical thinking too.

Study Politics in a fascinating setting

Scotland is an inspiring location in which to study politics. An independent country until the Act of Union in 1707, debates still rage about whether it should remain part of the United Kingdom, and how the Scottish role in British history should be considered. Using Scotland as an example, there is lots to discuss, from the implications of colonialism to the circumstances under which a country should become independent.

What’s more, Scotland is notable for a history of strong and remarkable leaders, offering plenty of case studies for our students here to consider. You can compare the experience of Scotland in Politics and Leadership to that of your own country, and those of your fellow students, who will be joining us from all over the world. They will benefit from sharing your experiences and opinions, just as you’ll learn from them in turn.

Develop vital skills for academia and the workplace

On our Politics and Leadership programmes, you’ll develop the skills needed for a leader, whether you intend to become a politician, a CEO, or simply stand out in your class. That includes skills like public speaking, voicing an opinion persuasively, but also the art of disagreeing with others respectfully.

Depending on the programme you choose, you might learn how to write and deliver a powerful speech, learn to write an essay in the style required by British universities, or explore the leadership styles of various notable leaders, and see which style you might like to adopt for yourself, growing your confidence in yourself as a leader in the process.

Learn from your fellow students

You’ll get to learn about Politics and Leadership from our expert teaching staff. But just as important is what you can learn from your fellow students.

An Oxford Royale Academy classroom represents an incredible range of experience of different political systems and leadership styles, where you might be alongside students who’ve lived in Donald Trump’s USA, Xi Jinping’s China, Jacinda Ardern’s New Zealand or Paul Kagame’s Rwanda. If you want to know what it’s like to live under a different political system than your own, or what the consequences are of a particular policy, you might only have to ask and see which of your fellow students has experienced it. It’s likely they’ll be just as interested in what you have to say about your own experiences as well.

“In every topic, every student equally contributed his or her ideas and made each other see things from a different lens. It was this abundance of new perspectives and the chance to look at things from those different angles that made it an extremely fulfilling experience.”

- Minjinsor, Mongolia

“One benefit of a programme of this kind is the diversity and the fact that the students came from many different countries. In my opinion, that made discussions and debates more dynamic, as it wasn’t biased and we almost always saw multiple sides to the same story.”
