University College

A contender for the oldest college in Oxford (founded in 1249), historic 'Univ' is one of Oxford's largest and grandest colleges.

ORA students staying in University College accommodation will live and study among the college’s historic buildings.

About University College

Founded in 1249, University College is among Oxford’s most historic Colleges and has claimed to be its oldest – other candidates include Queen’s, Merton, and Balliol. Its original buildings were on the site of what is now Brasenose College, but in 1332 the College moved to its iconic High Street location.

One of Oxford’s largest and grandest Colleges, University College – affectionately known as “Univ” – boasts an impressive catalogue of alumni ranging from Bill Clinton to Stephen Hawking, as well as Labour Prime Minister Clement Attlee, and C.S. Lewis (author of The Chronicles of Narnia). Perhaps its most celebrated alumnus was rather more notorious in his day: Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was expelled from the College in 1811 for circulating copies of his The Necessity of Atheism. Today, however, a Shelley Memorial building stands in the College, with a white marble statue of the poet as its centrepiece.

Safety and security on campus

In the college, students are overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who very often are current members of the University of Oxford.

The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss university applications.

Each campus has a few members of residential staff who live in the college throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.
