Science Summer School in Oxford

Discover some of the most complex and amazing phenomena that make up our world with Oxford Royale Academy’s rich and varied Science summer school courses.

Understand the world around you by studying science

Dive into the world of science this summer with Oxford Royale Academy. Our summer school programme goes above and beyond what you’ve studied at school, looking at the cutting edge of modern science, and the impact it can have on technology and our daily lives. That could be manipulating genetics in order to create immunity to diseases that would otherwise be fatal, or working with particles in order to run experiments so we can illuminate what happened at the beginning of time itself.

On this course, you’ll understand the methods that scientists of the past and present have used to reach, test and prove their conclusions. What’s more, you’ll learn what’s happening right now in whichever scientific field you’re focusing on, and what promising discoveries might lie just ahead, waiting to be uncovered by the scientists of the future – by people like you.

You might want to deepen your knowledge of a subject found on the traditional curriculum, such as Physics, Chemistry or Biology, or select a newer discipline that’s still developing and expanding, such as Forensic Science, Sustainability or Neuroscience. Whichever option you choose, you’ll be exposed to the latest ideas and research in the subject and discover the many ways in which it impacts our lives.

Test scientific theories through experimentation

Studying Science with Oxford Royale Academy doesn’t just involve learning about the experiments other people have carried out, and what they discovered.

A vital part of Science is experimentation, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to learn how to run an experiment, test a hypothesis and draw reasonable, informed scientific conclusions yourself. There’s no better way to develop your understanding of Science and how scientists work than trying it out for yourself in this way. You’ll also learn how to write up an experiment properly, a skill that will undoubtedly benefit you in your school career, and beyond.

Find out about new discoveries

For a school curriculum to stay on top of the latest discoveries in modern science is challenging; unless your school is buying new textbooks every year, they’re likely to be a little behind the times.

At Oxford Royale Academy, we work hard to ensure our teaching is completely up-to-date with the latest news and discoveries from the world of Science, from Chemistry to Genetics, even into new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.

As our teachers come from a variety of backgrounds, many of them current PhD or postdoctoral students, you could find yourself learning about a fascinating new development from someone who is currently discovering it!

Explore career paths for budding scientists

Scientific career paths can be varied – while some scientists study in academia and carry out their research at a university, funded by grants or endowments, others are employed by the government or by the private sector. Navigating a preferred career path depends on the area of Science you’re interested in and the type of work you might like to do, and the steps that you take to pursue that career will differ considerably.

Our teachers can help you work out what shape your future career might take, and advise you on what to study and where, and anything else that you can do to increase your chances of achieving the ideal scientific career for you.

Study in an inspiring setting

It was in Oxford that Francis Bacon developed what would become the scientific method, in Oxford that Dorothy Hodgkin discovered the structure of penicillin, and more recently, in Oxford where Fred Taylor worked out how to measure the atmosphere of distant planets.

When you join our Oxford summer school, not only do you live and learn in a beautiful and historic place, you’re also in the setting that produced these incredible discoveries. It’s hard to come here and not be inspired by what you could achieve in your own future scientific career.

Live and learn alongside students from all over the world

Science is universal and interconnected. Of all career paths, scientists are among the most likely to work in a different country from where they grew up, and they often move from place to place as well, particularly in academia. Even those who don’t will need to travel extensively to attend conferences and share ideas with their international colleagues.

In this way, a discovery made in Nigeria benefits people across the world, and might then be built on by scientists in South Korea, the USA, or right here in Oxford. Get a flavour of what it’s like to work with international colleagues by studying with Oxford Royale Academy, where students from 150 different nationalities attend our summer school.
