Merton College

Merton College

Founded in 1264, this beautiful college is known for its academic calibre and is located just off the Oxford High Street in the town centre.

Merton has a reputation for academic excellence, and this is certainly reflected in the four Nobel prize winners it counts among its alumni: chemist Frederick Soddy (1921), modernist literary icon T.S. Eliot (1948), zoologist Nikolaas Tinbergen (1973) and physicist Sir Anthony Leggett (2003).

About Merton College

Originally catering for just twenty fellows, Merton dates its foundation back to 1264 and is therefore a strong contender for the oldest College in the University (Balliol and St Edmund Hall have made the same claim over the years). The college’s Mob Quad and Library are respectively the oldest quadrangle and library in the University, built in three stages from 1288-1378, and the porter’s lodge still boasts a crenellated battlement dating back to the reign of Henry V.

Merton has a desirable city centre location just off the High Street, although stepping into its peaceful gardens can make the hustle and bustle of everyday Oxford seem a million miles away. Oxford Royale Summer Schools students staying at Merton College are guaranteed easy access to Oxford’s many attractions and amenities, with key historical sites on their doorstep.

Safety and security on campus

In the college, students are overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who very often are current members of the University of Oxford. Residential pastoral staff will be on hand to address student queries and assist them at any time of the day or night.
