Course Summary

Forensic Science will introduce students to the fundamental concepts underpinning the field. The topics of chemical analysis, toxicology, crime scene investigation, DNA profiling and blood pattern analysis will be studied. This will then lead to exploring the future of modern Forensic Science, by studying emerging confirmatory laboratory techniques and critiquing the use of trace evidence. In addition, students will be introduced to the theory of forensic jurisprudence, and will be asked to put it into practice by presenting their own expert witness testimony.

The teaching of the course will involve a mix of lecture-based and interactive learning, and students will have the opportunity to undertake a practical exercise on crime scene analysis and evidence collection.

What will you get out of the Forensic Science?

By the end of this two-week course, which incorporates written and oral assessments, you will improve your reflective writing and group work skills. You will also be able to interpret forensic evidence and have an understanding of the current limitations and future directions of Forensic Science. This course will not only equip you with the skills and knowledge to help you progress in your further studies and future career, but it will also empower you to think more widely about the value Forensic Science brings to our society.

The Broadening Horizons Programme

This subject is part of the Broadening Horizons course at Oxford Royale Summer Schools’s Oxford summer school.

The Broadening Horizons course, for students aged 16 to 18, is suitable both for those who are trying to decide what to pursue in further education, and for those who simply want to learn about a variety of interesting subjects - 30+ study options are available!

Students choose two morning classes and one afternoon workshop to provide a diverse and stimulating curriculum that is tailored to their needs, allowing them to pursue areas of interest or try out something new. Students studying Broadening Horizons in Oxford get the chance to live and learn in a college of the University of Oxford or in our 17th-century manor house, Yarnton Manor.

Expectations and Pre-requisites

No specific experience or skills are expected of students wishing to participate in this course, although a strong command of the English language is vital. We ask students to bring a laptop with them. If any additional course-specific equipment or software is needed, you will be notified in advance.
