Forensic Science will introduce students to the fundamental concepts underpinning the field. The topics of chemical analysis, toxicology, crime scene investigation, DNA profiling and blood pattern analysis will be studied. This will then lead to exploring the future of modern Forensic Science, by studying emerging confirmatory laboratory techniques and critiquing the use of trace evidence. In addition, students will be introduced to the theory of forensic jurisprudence, and will be asked to put it into practice by presenting their own expert witness testimony.
The teaching of the course will involve a mix of lecture-based and interactive learning, and students will have the opportunity to undertake a practical exercise on crime scene analysis and evidence collection.
By the end of this two-week course, which incorporates written and oral assessments, you will improve your reflective writing and group work skills. You will also be able to interpret forensic evidence and have an understanding of the current limitations and future directions of Forensic Science. This course will not only equip you with the skills and knowledge to help you progress in your further studies and future career, but it will also empower you to think more widely about the value Forensic Science brings to our society.
