Study Leadership & Teambuilding with our Cambridge Summer School 2020. This Leadership and Teambuilding course for teens is designed to increase confidence and self-belief in the students, by engaging them in a number of dynamic team activities and scenarios, fostering creativity and developing students' leadership skills through speeches and presentations.

Course Summary

This Leadership and Teambuilding course for teens is designed to increase confidence and self-belief in the students, by engaging them in a number of dynamic team activities and scenarios. Students are encouraged to develop their leadership skills through speeches and presentations. The highly-practical workshop sessions also aim to foster their creativity through activities such as designing a brand or invention, as well as emphasising the importance of team discussion.

In this course, students think about what it means to really be a part of a team, considering what attitudes and insights may be called upon if they were placed in a position of leadership. They are called upon to participate in a range of group activities and initiatives, which thrust them into different and varied scenarios and ask them to think about the range of strategies that they might employ to navigate the task at hand successfully, as well as any obstacles that may arise.

In addition to these practical offerings, they are also required to reflect upon and discuss the more theoretical elements of leadership. These two elements are used in conjunction with each other to allow students to explore the kinds of responsibility that they find themselves adopting in their everyday lives. Working collaboratively, they are encouraged to discuss and evaluate their performance in activities, enabling them to prepare for similar eventualities outside the classroom.



The table below gives an indication of the subject areas that will be covered in each day’s lecture and seminar. Although every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, please note that topics and timings may be subject to change.

  • Introduction and outline of the course.
  • Getting to know one another.
  • Ice breaking activities (human bingo).
  • Creating the 'ideal team member'.
  • What it means to be a team member - working for one another.
  • Working and communicating in large team situations (human knot exercise).
  • Desired qualities in a leader. Why do we look up to certain people? Is there an such thing as a 'natural leader?
  • Putting leadership into practice - 'blindfolded waiter'.
  • Assessing leadership - 'lava flow' activity. How do we work under different leaders?
  • 'T.E.A.M' (Group Dynamics) Practical exploration of individual & corporate Leadership & Team awareness qualities.
Wednesday
  • Who do we look up to as leaders?
  • What is teamwork? What is leadership?
  • Communication is a team environment
  • Assuming a role in a group - 'reading race'.
  • Creating the perfect team - who are the people who make teams successful?
  • Utilising group members effectively - making use of the talents of a group in a competitive environment (paper aeroplane challenge, tower building challenge).
  • Egg drop challenge - can you beat the drop?
Friday
  • Who are the actors that affect the way a team works together?
  • The Aprrentics - competing as a team to produce the best product and pitch to give to the class.
  • Presenting ideas as a group before your peers.
  • Judgement and evaluation - how effectively did you work as teams? Which team was the most effective?
  • How do people make decisions when working as a team?
  • Arctic survival exercise - how to make decisions in a life or death situations.
  • Evaluation of the Arctic survival exercise - who survived the extreme conditions?
  • When is it appropriate to use the various decision-making methods?
  • Is there a perfect way to make decisions?

What will you get out of the Leadership and Teambuilding Summer Course?

In addition to expanding their knowledge of leadership and teambuilding, students will learn to work together with people they are not yet familiar with, who may come from markedly different cultures and thus have different expectations of leadership. They are encouraged to reflect on their own leadership styles and the roles that they play in group situations, in order build upon these foundations by taking into account other styles and characteristics. As a consequence they are able to observe and implement a variety of leadership styles, played and expressed within a team scenario. The theory-based elements of the course are put into practice during these role-play scenarios.

Students will come to understand that there are a variety of different roles that need to be filled in a group situation, as well as a variety of leadership styles that may be deployed. Through this knowledge, they learn their own strengths and weakness when it comes to working in different positions (either as leader or part of the team) and are thus able to plan effectively based on this knowledge. Problem-solving tasks enable students to consider team dynamics in a potentially unfamiliar light; they are then encouraged to present this work to their peers. Peer feedback is crucial for this element of the course, so students also learn how to give and receive constructive criticism in a mature and positive way.

The New Perspectives Programme

This subject is part of the New Perspectives course at Oxford Royale Summer Schools’s Cambridge summer school.

The New Perspectives summer course, for students aged 13 to 15, is suitable both for those who are trying to decide what to pursue in further education, and for those who simply want to learn about a variety of interesting subjects - 17+ study options are available!

Students choose two morning classes and one afternoon workshop to provide a diverse and stimulating curriculum that is tailored to their needs, allowing them to pursue areas of interest or try out something new. Students studying New Perspectives in Cambridge get the chance to live and learn in a college of the University of Cambridge.
