Law Summer School in Cambridge

Studying Law with Oxford Royale Academy in Cambridge gives you a head start towards a rewarding and versatile career path.

Get to grips with Law in a stimulating international environment

Every aspect of our lives is touched by Law, from our employment, to our family lives, to the different ways in which our countries are run. Learning more about this fascinating subject at our Cambridge summer school could be the first step you take towards your career as a lawyer.

In total, our summer school is attended by students of 150 different nationalities – every one of those countries with a slightly or significantly different system of law and government, and different ways in which those systems play out in their society. Studying with us, you can compare your experiences from your society with students from all over the world, exploring how Law works within the social contract of different countries, and seeing different ways that it can succeed or fail. This helps to illuminate where there can be gaps between Law in theory and Law in practice, and may challenge some of the assumptions students make about law and order around the world.

Understand the basics across a range of topics in Law

When we think about Law, we often focus solely on criminal law, as it is perhaps the branch of Law that is most often in the news. But Law extends far beyond this.

During your time with Oxford Royale Academy, you’ll get to grips with a wide range of areas of Law, such as Business Law, Contract Law, International Law (especially in relation to human rights, a fascinating area for discussion) and Tort Law. By the end of your time with us, you’ll have a solid introductory knowledge across all major fields in Law, and will have a better idea of what interests you most in the legal world.

Hone your skills in a mock trial

Our programmes give you the chance to get to grips with the reality of Law through the format of a mock trial. Using a plausible case as the basis for the trial, you’ll learn the kind of preparation that lawyers go through before a trial, and consider the relevant case law.

What’s more, you’ll explore how getting to the truth of what happened is only part of a trial, looking at issues such as mitigation and sentencing. A mock trial also has the benefit of developing your confidence and public speaking abilities, both vital for your future as a lawyer.

Go on exciting field trips

Nothing brings the world of Law to life like seeing it in action first-hand!

Depending on students’ age and programme choice, they will have the opportunity to experience a variety of subject-specific activities and excursions. Past trips have even included visits to a functioning courtroom, allowing students to witness a real criminal trial as it unfolds!

While a lot of the study of Law happens in the abstract, often with reference to cases that are decades or even centuries old, our field trips are designed to remind students of just how Law can affect people’s daily lives, and the impact that this abstract study has on our society as a whole.

Compare and contrast experiences with peers from around the world

Law differs around the world, such as the key distinction between Common Law and Civil Law systems that all Law students learn about early on in their studies.

With Oxford Royale Academy, you’ll be studying alongside students from all over the world; students of 150 nationalities attend our summer school. That means you can compare how law systems operate, exploring the impact of different constitutional law or different justice systems, not just from descriptions in a textbook or as hypotheticals, but by discussing the experiences of people who have lived in those societies. It’s not only illuminating; it’s fascinating.
