Course Summary

There are many components to the art of being a great writer, from the ability to get into someone else’s head or the craft of maintaining a feeling of suspense to the straightforward nuts-and-bolts skills of writing convincing dialogue or punctuating correctly.

This course will introduce you to the art of creative writing through the exploration and critical analysis of a wide variety of genres. By considering the different styles and methods employed by these genres, you will be shown how you can hone your own creative writing skills.

Course Summary

This Online Creative Writing course will help you improve your creative writing skills through exploring different creative writing techniques, as well as through exposure to some of the finest examples of literature.

You are encouraged to experiment with your own writing, as well as engaging in literary reviews of other people’s writing, including famous authors as well as their peers. Based around advice and examples from famous literary figures, you will encounter the obstacles and opportunities that present themselves when writing – including learning ways to overcome the dreaded writer’s block.

Our Online Summer School consists of week-long summer courses starting every Monday from the beginning of May to the end of August. Guided and independent study periods, along with student-led breakout rooms, enable you to explore your chosen field with expert tutors and international peers. You will learn as from each other as well as from your tutor, broadening your view of the world and expanding your appreciation for different peoples and cultures.

Individual tutoring for Research Projects

If group lessons are not for you, and you would prefer to have individual tutoring to develop your own independent research project you can contact our team to arrange this. We will match you with a world class academic with expertise in your field of interest. Over a minimum of 3 weeks, you will have the opportunity to independently develop a research project, with 10 hours' worth of one-to-one contact with your tutor. This project will give you the chance to expand your knowledge and delve deeper into a subject you are passionate about. Your project will be assessed and graded with detailed feedback, and a letter of recommendation and/or certificate will be awarded upon completion.

How do I book a place on my chosen course?

Once you have decided which course you would like to attend, you can book online using our secure booking system. The enrolment process will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. You will need:

  • your personal and contact details
  • the details of the adult responsible for paying the course fees
  • the name of the course you would like to follow and the dates for which you would like to book
  • a credit or debit card for settling the course fee payment

Once your application has been submitted and your payment has been received by us, you will be sent an email confirming that you have been successfully enrolled. If you have any queries please contact our Admissions team, who will be happy to assist you.

How do I pay for my course?

You can pay with a debit or credit card using our secure online booking system. If you would like to enrol and make your deposit payment via Bank Transfer, please contact our Admissions team, who will be happy to assist you in doing so.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes, all students will be awarded an Oxford Royale Academy Graduation Certificate in their chosen course upon satisfactory completion of the course. Students will also receive a personalised report card containing formative feedback that they can use to ensure further improvement in their chosen subject.

What's the average group size?

Our average class size is 9 students. Based on our experience of operating online summer schools in previous years, we find that this is the optimum class size for both student progress and participant enjoyment is around 8 students. Our maximum class size is 12 students.

What time zones will you offer?

Two different start times for courses will be offered in order to make our course available to all geographic locations.

For our WESTERN HEMISPHERE time zone, the first live lesson of each day will commence at 1700 UK time and the second and final live lesson of each day will conclude at 2000 UK time.

For our EASTERN HEMISPHERE time zone, the first live lesson of each day will commence at 0700 UK time and the second and final live lesson of each day will conclude at 1000 UK time.

There is a handy tool for converting UK time to your own time zone, here. Kindly note that we cannot guarantee both time zones to be available for each date selection.

What technological requirements are there for this course?

You will need a stable internet connection for the duration of your course.  It is a requirement that your video camera is turned on at all times during your lessons to enable full interaction with your teachers and peers. You will need to be able to access Oxford Royale’s chosen educational platform, which is Microsoft Teams for Education.  Guest lectures are likely to be delivered over a separate platform in order to support more attendees – we will provide you with links and instructions in due course.

Can I take more than one course?

Yes, you can attend as many courses as you wish. Please note that only one course can be attended per week. You are entitled to a discount of GBP 100 for each additional course that you book.

If I need to cancel my booking, will I get my money back?

You have the right to cancel and receive a full refund of monies paid, without giving any reason, within 14 days of making a booking.  Cancellation requests must be made in writing, by email to us on [email protected]. Cancellations that fall outside of this 14-day cooling off period will be governed by the relevant clause of our terms and conditions.

When will I receive the information to be able to access my course?

You will be sent your course login information the week prior to your course start date.

If I have technical difficulties accessing my course, who can I speak with?

Technical support will be available before and during your course.  Contact details will be provided with your course login information.

On which dates does this programme operate?

Our Oxford Online Summer School will operate from May to August inclusive. For specific dates for your chosen course, please see our dates and prices directory, which you can find on our dates and prices webpage.

Can I change from an on campus programme to an online programme (or vice versa)?

We would be happy to discuss this with you, and depending on your individual circumstances and course availability, we may be able to transfer your booking from one study mode to the other.
