Being able to write effective, persuasive, and lucid essays is a vital skill that we all need, irrespective of the subject we study. Whether you’re thinking of applying for medicine, law, engineering, English, or any other subject, at some point in your academic career you will need to write extended pieces of writing to persuade or inform a tutor, and you will be expected to write to a high standard.
This course will guide you through the whole essay-writing process from analysis of the question through to writing an effective conclusion. It will teach you how to advance your argument effectively by employing certain linguistic techniques, how to plan efficiently, and how to use paragraphs to structure your essay successfully. By following the tactics and techniques taught in this course, you will be able to write a coherent and convincing essay. The course is aimed at speakers of foreign languages, but may also be a useful tool for English speakers looking to hone their essay writing skills.

This tutorial will teach you to ‘unravel’ an essay question and really look in-depth at the question posed. This will involve analysing the phrases used, the vocabulary, and the grammar. Once this has been done, you can get a good idea as to the meaning or meanings in a title, at which point you will be in a position to begin answering the question.
This tutorial guides you through the planning stage of the essay-writing process. It will cover selecting and rejecting ideas, categorising them, and choosing in what order and framework to present them within the essay itself.
This tutorial will guide you through how to re-arrange your ideas and put them into effective paragraphs that will present your argument to its best advantage. The second part of the tutorial will examine the grammar of English essay writing – both the grammar within a sentence and the grammar of linking sentences.
This tutorial gathers all of the things that you have learnt so far in the course together in an attempt to write a full essay. By guiding you through how to create topic sentences that define paragraphs, how to link paragraphs together to form a cohesive whole, how to write an introductory paragraph, and how to write a conclusion, you should, by the end of the tutorial, be able to write your own effective essay.
