Course Summary

Forensic science is an exciting and ever-changing field of study, one that focuses on the practical application of scientific theory across a wide range of disciplines, as has been brought into the public eye through numerous television series. This course will provide you with an introduction to the field and its key techniques, uses, and history.

Taking this course you will see that the reality of forensic science, and its role in criminal investigations, is very different to how it is presented in TV dramas such as CSI. This course will provide you with an overview of forensic science, covering the history of the practice, its relationship with the British legal system, its numerous disciplines, and the work typically encountered by a forensic scientist.

Topics Covered

During the course you will:

  • understand what differentiates forensic science from other science subjects
  • gain an insight into what it is like working as a forensic scientist
  • examine some of the key techniques that a forensic scientist would use when examining a crime scene

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • discuss the various roles and applications of forensic science in the present day, particularly in a legal context
  • understand the fundamental principles of crime scene analysis (and how they differ from those popularised in the media!)

What’s Included?

  • Interactive Tutorials
  • Online quizzes and exams
  • Access to the course discussion forum
  • Course worksheets and case studies
  • ORA Certificate of completion

Tutorial 1: Definition & History of Forensic Science (1 - 1.5 hours)

This tutorial begins by exploring the relationship between science and the law to aid the British legal system. We then move on to discuss the history of forensic science dating back to the days of the Roman Empire, through the centuries all the way up to modern day forensic science in the 21st century. This brief journey through time introduces students to key cases that have helped to develop modern forensic practices.

Tutorial 2: Forensic Disciplines (1 - 1.5 hours)

This tutorial will establish an understanding of the numerous disciplines within the field of ‘forensic science’ including, but not limited to, biology, chemistry, toxicology, digital crime, and ballistics. The tutorial will address the fundamental types of evidence and associated crimes encountered on a day-to-day basis within each sub-discipline, and will explore some famous case studies to illustrate how forensic theory is applied in practice.

Tutorial 3: Forensic Investigation (1 - 1.5 hours)

This tutorial will look in detail at the day-to-day role of working forensic scientists, aiming to dispel common misconceptions about the jobs available in the field of forensics before taking a look at how scientists work together to see a case through successfully from crime scene to court. This tutorial builds on the previous one in its discussion of how law and science must work together to produce a successful outcome.

Tutorial 4: UK Forensic Science Providers (1 - 1.5 hours)

The final tutorial of the course reviews the current state of forensic science in the UK and abroad. It does so by looking at the main forensic service providers in the United Kingdom, how and why they have changed dramatically in the last few years, and what these changes mean for the future of forensic science. This tutorial also aims to bring together many of the threads that have run throughout the course.
