A Day in the Life of an Oxford Royale Medical Student

Are you an aspiring doctor, ready to take on the next challenge? Maybe you’re still exploring your future career pathways, and want to try out a hands-on course that will help you discover what it’s like to study medicine.

Whatever your goals, our Medicine Summer School is an enriching academic and cultural experience that will help you achieve your goals – and have an unforgettable summer! Check out what a day could look like for a 16 – 18 year old student in Oxford…

Rise and Shine – 8:00 AM

Keble College’s Dining Hall: Built in 1878, the longest hall in Oxford can seat over 300 students

With Oxford Royale, you’ll be staying on campus at one of the University of Oxford’s stunning colleges. You have breakfast in the centuries-old dining hall, surrounded by your new friends, before heading out for class.

Morning Lessons – 9:00 AM

After a few days of lessons, you’re ready to take on new challenges. This morning, it’s all about neurology – understanding the brain, nerves, and how doctors diagnose neurological conditions. You take notes, ask questions, and even dive into a real world case study. Two short breaks give you time to grab a snack and chat with friends before finishing your assignments.

Lunch Break – 1:00 PM

It’s time to stretch your legs! You and your friends head into Oxford to grab lunch – maybe a sandwich from a local café or a quick bite by the Radcliffe Camera. There’s time to relax, take some pictures, and soak in the history before heading back for the afternoon session.

Afternoon Lessons – 2:00 PM

Back to class! Before your afternoon workshop, you’re working in groups to refresh your memory on Medical Ethics and practical skills – it’s important to rehearse effective communication techniques in medicine across various situations, from an initial consultation to the empathetic delivery of a diagnosis, using detailed case scenarios.

Clinical Skills Lab – 3:30 PM

Now comes the exciting part – a medical workshop! Today, you’re practicing clinical skills: learning how to take patient histories, measure vitals, and interpret test results. You feel like a real doctor-in-training, stethoscope in hand! By the end of the session you have also practiced proper wound care, tried your hand at taking blood pressure, and even practised your skills on a life-sized simulation patient.

Time to Relax– 5:00 PM

After a busy afternoon, it’s time to unwind. You and your friends grab a punt and set off down the river, taking turns steering (some better than others!). You have the chance to experience Oxford in the sunshine like a true student, before heading back to campus.

Dinner on Campus – 6:00 PM

After drying off from punting, you gather for dinner in the dining hall… You still can’t believe you get to spend so much time in this incredible college! It’s the perfect chance to catch up with classmates and swap stories from the day.

Evening Activities – 8:00 PM

Feeling confident? You decide to join the Debate Society, where students discuss big challenges and sharpen their debate skills. It’s inspiring to hear different perspectives and build confidence speaking in front of others.

The night’s not over yet! A campus-wide quiz night is in full swing, and you join a team, testing your knowledge on everything from pop culture to science. Some students opt for a game of football in University Parks, but you’re saving your energy for Run Club tomorrow!

Lights Out – 10:30 PM

Curfew arrives, and it’s time to reset. Tomorrow brings new lessons, workshops, and adventures – and you can’t wait!
