Course: Introduction to Engineering
Age: 13 years old
“This summer school has taught me many things, including the basics of engineering, which will most definitely help me in my future – academically and professionally.”
My experience in Lady Margaret Hall attending the Oxford Royale Academy was amazing. I certainly had been nervous when I had arrived at the college, being a student that had never been out of my home continent or even away from my parents for a little more than a week. My parents and friends back home said it would be fine and that it’s good to step out of my comfort zone every once in a while, but that didn’t stop me from being a little anxious about the trip. However, within the first few days at the summer school I learnt that there wasn’t anything much to stress about. The community at ORA was warm and welcoming and the counsellors and fellow students there were awesome to hangout with.
Sure, there were some things like deadlines for homework essays or a presentation that I had to work on, but it wasn’t like it was something I hadn’t done before back at my school, so I felt relaxed for most of the summer school (I say most of the time because there were times when I would wake up in the morning and panic when I saw the time was well beyond breakfast time, only to realize I was looking at the time in my home country, not Oxford time).
The class I took was the Introduction to Engineering class and I don’t think I have ever had that much fun learning before in my life (plus points for learning a subject I love learning about). The students I studied with were friendly and were awesome to talk to, especially because we had similar interests. Of course, I can’t talk about the class without mentioning the teacher, whom I must give my thanks to. He was the best teacher I ever had, even for just two weeks. But in those two weeks he taught me the ins and outs of the basics of engineering, the different branches of engineering and the academic routes I could take in the future, while making the class environment a healthy learning space and making sure that all of my doubts and questions were all answered to the best of his abilities.I will remember the different fun activities we had and the memories we made for a really long time. Even the homework he gave was really fun to work on, as far as fun homework goes. I must also remark how much fun I had designing the presentation about interstellar ‘faster than light travel’ for a class we had about different topics related to engineering. I cannot thank you enough, Mr. Rehan.
The different excursions we went on and the places we went to were wonderful too. I loved the architecture of the buildings in Oxford and London and seeing it in person was fascinating. It was a nice break from what I see in my home country.
All in all, my experience in the Oxford Royale Academy was amazing and I would highly recommend my students to apply to ORA. This summer school has taught me many things, including the basics of engineering, which will most definitely help me in my future academics. However, the most important lesson I learnt from this, is to be more independent in my daily life and not always relying on my parents for everything.
“Every day, from the moment I woke up to when I went to sleep, I felt like a University of Oxford student. Studying in the college, eating in the dining halls, sleeping in the dorms… It was a truly amazing experience.”
“It can be said that the teaching was not limited to the formal classes, but was incorporated throughout our journey.”
“Thanks to Oxford Royale Academy, I now have the necessary tools to take on all future obstacles.”
