Course Summary

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the IELTS examination and how to prepare and practise for the assessment in a fun and proactive environment. It will help students improve both competence and confidence in their test-taking abilities, alongside allowing them to develop their academic English communication skills.

In addition to working on the students’ writing style, the course introduces them to the basic elements of the IELTS exam, which many students will take before submitting an application to university.

What to expect from IELTS Preparation Course

IELTS comes in two versions: General and Academic. To ensure the best use of their time, students can choose the type of IELTS that is best suited to their requirements of the English language.

Over a period of two weeks, students identify, practise and improve the reading and writing skills that will be necessary in their future study. The course focuses on the specific requirements of formal and academic English, as opposed to the more informal English that many students may have studied to date.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will have:

  • improved their written style

  • increased their vocabulary in an academic context

  • practised the basic skills required in each section of the IELTS exam

  • understood how to communicate with English language speakers

  • honed their English in preparation for the IELTS exam, with a thorough appreciation of what the exam entails, how best to prepare and practise, and the skills required for success

  • read a variety of academic texts as well as produced their own written responses

  • developed their awareness of conventions in academic writing, including structure, style, vocabulary and referencing

  • improved their general English in all areas.

Topics Covered

During the course students receive over 40 hours of tuition focusing on IELTS Preparation. In preparation for IELTS, students study the four essential language skills: writing, reading, speaking and listening in relation to the exam. Students are able to practise their skills with mini-tests and timed questions similar to those that appear in the test. At the end of the course, each student is given a report card outlining their progress and highlighting possible areas for improvement. Note that the course does not include the official IELTS examination and students will have to register for the exam independently after the course.

Teachers on this EFL programme are native-level English speakers and all have at least a bachelor’s degree. Teachers are qualified according to British Council standards (CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or equivalent Level 5 TEFL qualification). Class sizes for morning and afternoon sessions are kept to a maximum of 15 students.

Welcome to the City of Oxford - your home this summer

ORA Experience

Oxford is a city like no other, combining startlingly beautiful architecture with a buzzing, modern city centre, with superb shopping, restaurants, cafés and more. With the colleges of Oxford University at its heart, some almost 800 years old, it is a city steeped in history and academia.

Students on Oxford Royale's Oxford summer courses will have the chance to live, dine and study in this stunning city, exploring all of its major sites and discovering its hidden secrets. Through both organised trips to key landmarks and free time in the evenings, students will become acquainted with all that Oxford has to offer.

As students walk the cobbled streets and gaze up at the spires, gargoyles and honey-coloured stone buildings, they will be walking in the footsteps of some of the most influential figures in history, including prime ministers, presidents, Nobel prize-winning scientists, authors and more.

Useful information for students & parents

Students will be accommodated in comfortable single or twin rooms depending on their allocated college - please contact our registrations team if you would like more information. Twin rooms are strictly between students of the same gender, and males/females are separated by corridoor and/or staircase. Accommodation is the standard accommodation for university undergraduates who study at the university, so students are able to get a flavour for what being an undergraduate at the university might be like. Bathrooms are typically shared between students of the same gender, though in some cases en-suite facilities are available.

Pastoral care & student welfare

The programme is overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who very often are current members of the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge. The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss university applications. Each campus has members of residential staff who live in the college throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.
