Course Summary

In the current digital era, rapid technological advancements have a direct impact on our way of life. The field of Robotics is a clear example of this. As an interdisciplinary science, which combines mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, information engineering and computer science, robotics seeks to create systems that can replicate human actions and aid various applications.

Robots add tremendous value, operating autonomously in dangerous environments (such as underwater and in space), manufacturing systems and home automation. Within this one-week course, students will take part in a series of fun and exciting practical tasks, to provide them with the opportunity to build and interact with their own robot. In addition, they will learn about the various components and functionalities of robots, their design, behaviour and control.

What will you get out of Robotics Revolution?

During the course you will develop your logic and design skills using customisable structural robotics components. You will also gain a solid understanding of interactive robot coding and control using a simple programming platform and sensors. By the end of the course, you will possess the hardware and software skills needed to set up, build and control a robotic system. This will allow you to gain an understanding of the importance of robotics in our current digital era, and how robots are adding tremendous value to day-to-day life.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have:

  • Developed an understanding of the terms robotics and robots
  • Discussed the history, origins and progression of robotic systems
  • Understood the functionalities of the given components of robotics kits
  • Downloaded and set up robot programming platforms
  • Programmed structural and motorised robot models for various functions
  • Completed robot exercises using a smart car robot
  • Solved robot exercises using Scratch/Arduino

Topics covered

During this one-week Robotics Revolution course, students will cover the following areas:

  • Key Robotic terms
  • The History of Robotics
  • Setting up a Robot Programming Platform
  • Using Scratch/Arduino to solve Robot exercises

Useful information for students & parents

Students will be accommodated in comfortable twin or dormitory rooms, separated by gender - please contact our registrations team if you would like more information. Accommodation is the standard accommodation for school pupils who study at either St Mary's School or Uppingham School, so students are able to get a flavour for what being a pupil at these prestigious UK boarding schools is like. Bathrooms are typically shared between students of the same gender.

Pastoral care & student welfare

The programme is overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who are there to help pupils with their daily needs and to run activities for them outside of class. The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss their course. Residential staff live in the school throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.
