National Rail operates frequent services linking all major cities and airports in the UK.
Direct rail services run between London Paddington and Oxford Station, and London Marylebone and Oxford Parkway Station. Oxford Parkway Station is the best station for students staying at Yarnton Manor, while Oxford Station is the best station for students staying in any other of our Oxford centres.
Direct rail services run between London Kings Cross and Cambridge Station.
Direct rail services run between London Waterloo and Ascot Station.
Direct rail services run between Edinburgh and Leuchars, which is 10 minutes from St Andrews.
London is served by national rail links from all major airports and other transport hubs. The Heathrow Express runs between London Heathrow Airport and London Paddington Station; The Gatwick Express runs between London Gatwick Airport and London Victoria Station; The Stansted Express runs between London Stansted Airport and London Liverpool Street Station. For travelling within London, the tube is the easiest method.
New Haven is served by Amtrak, Metro North and Shoreline East train service, arriving at Union Station. Taxis are available at the taxi stand outside the station. It is approximately a $5 to $10 ride to central campus. The Yale University nighttime minibus and daytime shuttle serve Union Station. The National Express provides frequent services between all major cities and airports in the UK.
London Heathrow and Gatwick airports are linked to Oxford by The Airline coach service, which operates a direct, frequent service twenty-four hours a day. This can be booked online at http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/ or bought from the driver in cash. The cost of a return ticket is between 15 – 35 GBP.
The Oxford Tube and X90 operate 24-hour services between Oxford and various destinations in London itself. At busy times of day it runs every 10-20 minutes. These services do not serve the London airports mentioned above.
London Stansted and London Luton airports are linked to Oxford by the National Express 737 coach service, running every two hours. Tickets can be booked online at http://www.nationalexpress.com/ or bought from the driver in cash. The cost of a return ticket is around 25 GBP from Stansted Airport and 17 GBP from Luton Airport.
London Heathrow Airport is linked to Cambridge by the National Express coach service, which operates a direct, frequent service up to 26 times a day. This can be booked online at http://www.nationalexpress.com or bought from the driver in cash. The cost of a single ticket is 12 GBP.
London Stansted and Luton airports are linked to Cambridge by the National Express coach service with up to 14 services a day. Tickets can be booked online at http://www.nationalexpress.com/ or bought from the driver in cash. The cost of a single ticket starts from 10 GBP.
London Heathrow Airport is linked to Ascot by the Courtney Bus Company number 10 service, which operates a direct, frequent service. Tickets can be bought from the driver in cash. Timetable and route information are available on http://m.courtneybuses.com/service.aspx?serviceid=7703.
Ascot is linked to central London by the Reading Buses number 702 service. Timetable and route information are available on https://bustimes.org/services/702-reading-bracknell-slough.
Visit the TfL website for transport information on the London Buses and Underground (the Tube). Our London Summer School is located at Prince’s Gardens in South Kensington. It takes about 30 minutes to travel from London Heathrow Airport to South Kensington tube station on the London Underground.
St Andrews is linked to Edinburgh by the Stagecoach Bus Company with frequent services throughout the day. Timetable and route information are available at https://www.stagecoachbus.com/routes/east-scotland/x59/dundee-or-st-andrews-edinburgh/xhdx059.i.
Please note that public coaches in the UK will not take children under the age of 14 if they are travelling without an adult.
Long distance bus companies with service to New Haven include Greyhound and Peter Pan Bus Lines. Buses arrive and depart from Union Station, where taxis are readily available for travel to campus.
Connecticut Limousine and Prime Time Shuttle provide economical ground transportation from airports in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey to locations in downtown New Haven. Please contact the carrier for schedules and fares (shuttles typically run every 30 to 60 minutes from the airports). Students travelling through Newark Airport can take the Air Train to the Newark International Airport stop on the New Jersey Transit railroad line into Penn Station in Manhattan. From there they can connect to an Amtrak train to New Haven or take the subway to Grand Central Terminal for Metro North train service to New Haven.
