Syllabus

This tutorial outlines the fundamental goals that a business must achieve in order to sustain itself. It also looks closely at business structures, exploring different hierarchical structures and how these may be more appropriate to different types of business, and also outlining the roles and responsibilities of internal departments that exist within a typical business.

The past century has seen swift evolution in the way different nations co-exist, and business has had to remain at the forefront of this fast-evolving world. This tutorial explores what businesses need to do in order to compete in the global marketplace, looking at topics such as corporate social responsibility, business strategy, and mission statements.

In this tutorial we look at the roots of management theory, journeying all the way back in time to Sun Tzu’s comments on leadership in his treatise ‘The Art of War’. We then explore the key management theorists of the 19th and 20th centuries, before focusing on modern management theory and in particular the work of Peter Drucker.

This final tutorial looks to the future, asking students to question what the role of the manager will be in 10, 20, or 100 years’ time. Automation in the workplace means that a manager’s role is changing, and businesses must keep up with the latest technology to survive. This tutorial also offers applications career and applications advice for those interested in pursuing business and management further.
