Learn the skills you need both to write well and to succeed commercially.
The study of Literature at school can be highly prescriptive, sticking closely to the canon without room for students to explore the greater diversity of the world of literature that they would be likely to encounter at university and in life in general. Additionally, it is rare that students are taught not only how to write creatively but also how to take the next step to becoming a published author, playwright or poet. The Creative Writing and Literature Course addresses both of these concerns, allowing students to look at a wide range of different texts and teaching them the skills they need both to write well and to succeed commercially. This course is therefore ideal both for students who wish to write for a living and those who wish to expand their literary horizons in order to gain a head start ahead of going to university.
The course is ideal for prospective students of Literature, Creative Writing or related subjects to gain skills ahead of further study or the workplace. The quiet and reflective atmosphere of Yarnton Manor is highly conducive to writing and previous residents have found that whether strolling in the grounds or sitting in the manor house, inspiration strikes at all times.
Many great writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Philip Pullman have found inspiration in Oxford. Its dreaming spires, grand buildings and quiet secluded writing spots will allow you to follow in their footsteps.
Support from academic tutors and small group tutorials ensure that students remain motivated and are equipped with the tools necessary to produce their work to the highest standard. Students will be expected to do considerable out-of-class study during this phase in order to expand their breadth and depth of knowledge beyond that which can be taught in timetabled sessions and to study any areas not covered in class that they feel would be valuable for their thesis.

About the Gap Year Programme
This course is part of the Gap Year Programme, residential in Yarnton Manor, near Oxford.
Students increasingly welcome some time to decide on their next steps before starting university or entering the workplace. They may choose to take up to a year off to travel, volunteer and explore new horizons. This is also known as a gap year. Those experiences undoubtedly provide valuable opportunities to acquire life skills. However, universities and employers also appreciate evidence of constructive academic development during a gap year.
Our 10 week Gap Year Programme enables students to achieve both. Our academic focus strengthens their profile for future university applications or career.
