Course Summary

What do Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat all have in common? Apart from being mobile and web applications, they are programmes designed to improve our daily lives, through being useful and providing enjoyment. These apps were all built from scratch with specific tools such as the ones students learn about in this iOS App Development programme with Oxford Royale Academy.

The course introduces students to the fields of computer programming and iOS mobile app development, giving them an understanding of to the computer science that lies behind app development and to the processes involved in the application development life cycle (ADLC). The course takes a hands-on approach to introduce basic programming concepts and skills needed for industry-standard app development projects.

Students seeking a longer technology or coding summer school might like to combine this programme with our Computer Science course.


Although it is not a requirement to have prior knowledge of Swift programming, familiarity with some computing terminology or concepts will be useful.

Please note that it is compulsory for all students enrolled on to this programme to bring a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro laptop with the following software installed:

  • MacOS High Sierra
  • Apple IDE tool – Xcode 11

What to expect from iOS App Development for 16-18 years

This course is comprehensive, providing an initial introduction into programming concepts and the fundamentals of app design and development (e.g. ADLC, native vs. cross platform apps, web and hybrid app development, and user interface and experiences issues).

Students then study how to design app interfaces from prototypes and wireframes using Sketch. Next comes an introduction to Xcode, the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for MacOS, and programming with Swift, an object-oriented programming language.

The course concludes with exploring published apps on App store, usability testing exercises, project presentations and peer reviews of the apps created by students.
