Oxford Royale Academy’s Business Discovery Plus programme offers students aged 10-12 the opportunity to live and study in a top UK boarding school. This one-week course will introduce students to the basic principles of business from an academic perspective.

Course Summary

On this one-week intensive course, students will learn about the aims and objectives of businesses and how they successfully operate. They will also cover topics such as consumer needs versus wants, the costs and risks of starting a business and explore modern marketing techniques. A variety of relevant and famous products will be examined in detail to discover what makes them successful before students delve into the exciting challenge of creating a product idea of their own.

At the end of the week, students will present their product at a Dragon’s Den-style product launch, where other groups will act as the Dragons and ask them to defend their product and the methodology of their business.

What to expect from the Business Discovery Plus course

Students participating in Oxford Royale Academy’s Business Discovery Plus course will learn all the relevant aspects of business and marketing.

In addition to rigorous academic theory, students will have the chance to get creative when they come to produce their own business idea and take it to fruition, from product design to sales pitches and through to customer delivery.

Topics Covered

This intensive week of business study covers all the key questions behind relevant business theories, such as:

Needs Versus Wants
Defining needs versus wants, and products versus services, which are used to fulfil these needs and wants. How do they differ? The aims and objectives of companies. How do they differ from each other?
Case Studies
Case Studies of the vision and mission of existing companies will be explored, using high-profile brands as an example.
The Marketing Mix and how it affects business decisions, including an overview of social media and how is has changed the way products are marketed.
How to Get a Business Off the Ground
The typical start-up costs of a business, (Premises, production, employees, heating and lighting, insurance, etc).

Students will explore their business idea from all relevant angles, before launching it to their peers in a Dragon’s Den style launch event.
