Course Summary

An effective and successful financial strategy enables a company to achieve company goals and objectives and maximise shareholder value. Effective and successful strategic financial management is about creating profit for a business and ensuring an acceptable return on investment.

Strategic financial management and decision making involves drawing up rigorous financial plans for a business, setting up financial controls, obtaining and allocating a company’s assets and liabilities.

This course is predominantly focused on achieving long-term success, students will develop skills in continuously evaluating, planning and adjusting the strategy to keep the company focused and on track towards delivering long term goals and results.

In addition, students will be introduced to the various elements of strategic financial management and will design elements aimed at maximising and efficiently using a firm’s financial resources. As such, the course will enable students to precisely define the strategic objectives for a firm, identify and quantify its available and potential resources, and then devise a specific plan to use its finances and other capital resources to achieve its long term goals. This will include practice in monitoring operational financing items like expenditures, revenues, accounts receivable and payable, cash flow and profitability.

The final part of the course will engage students in sketching out a financial strategy framework that can be used in the future on real world projects.

Tuesday Lecture 2: Strategic Financial Planning – establishing the criteria for effectiveness and success
Seminar 2: Collaborative group work exercises on applying the principles of strategic financial planning to a business challenge
Wednesday Lecture 3: Types of financial instruments- the building blocks
Seminar 3: Evaluating the different financial instruments – critical case study analysis
Thursday Lecture 4: Strategic Financial Reporting and Control- obtaining feedback and ensuring compliance
Seminar 4: Hands-on practice in applying reporting and control principles to ensure real-world compliance
Friday Lecture 5: Creating a blueprint for an effective and successful financial strategy – creating shareholder value and high performance
Seminar 5: Presentations, course review and action planning
