Course Summary

Scientists love to ask questions: How does this work? Why is it here? What happens if I…? Our Physics and Chemistry course aims to harness your curiosity, as well as develop your scientific imagination and reasoning, experimentation, and perseverance. As your confidence grows, so too will your understanding of core physical and chemical concepts, building on and often going beyond what they will have studied at school. New, more advanced concepts will be introduced that you might not otherwise have encountered, spurring you on to pursue Physics and Chemistry at a higher level – fostering enthusiasm for the subjects is a key aim of this course.

In Physics, you’ll look at the principles governing forces and how they interact with matter. This will encompass mechanics and the laws of motion, types of energy, and the key differences between waves and matter – using light and sound as examples. Practical elements include learning how to plot a graph correctly, using gradient and area.

In Chemistry, you’ll look at atomic structure and the concept of moles. The course also covers solutions and molar calculations and explores the properties of acids and bases. You will learn about the various types of chemical bond and look closely at chemical reactions and equations, as well as some simple kinetics and the collision theory of reactions.

Topics Covered

In addition to greatly furthering your knowledge of the areas of Chemistry and Physics, and thus increasing your enthusiasm for the subjects and the depth to which you can explore them in the future, the course also aims to provide skills useful outside the laboratory. Class discussions, presentations, role plays and written work all contribute to establish an understanding of key principles, and encourage you to think broadly around the topic in order to apply transferable skills to the rest of your studies.

In Week 2, there will be ample opportunity for you to pursue their own topic of interest, and to request specific topics for your final class. Throughout, the two subjects will be closely aligned, with emphasis on how physics and chemistry interact and how topics studied in one subject can readily be applied to the other. The course establishes important exam and presentation techniques of the kind that will be expected in universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, thereby giving budding scientists a head start in their future studies. Successful scientists need curiosity, observation skills, imagination, reasoning, experimentation, enthusiasm and perseverance: this course aims to foster and encourage all of these vital traits and leave you feeling passionate about the sciences and eager to learn more.

Course Summary

The class contains very little overlap with conventional high school physics. The physics covered in high school is over two hundred years old. It can be archaic and boring, yet physics today is on the brink of exciting new discoveries. For you to gain an appreciation of physics, it is best that you are exposed to the ideas and problems of modern physics which are covered in class.

The structure of this physics summer course is based mainly on discussion and worksheets. Problem solving in groups captures the activity of research physics well, and this is why group worksheets in class are an important part of the curriculum. The homework and presentation give you further opportunity to test their understanding, and to research and explain to your peers topics not covered in the classes.

During the first four days, the underlying ideas of relativistic physics are introduced. During the next three days quantum physics is introduced and analysed from perspectives of philosophy and technological applications. On the remaining days, a survey of other major areas of physics is offered for discussion.

Topics Covered

In addition to expanding your knowledge of physics, you will learn how to solve basic problems in relativistic physics and quantum physics; develop the conceptual sense to resolve common paradoxes in these fields; understand how these fundamentals are used to comprehend the world around us; gain a superficial understanding of some of the most important areas of modern physics; become familiar with some unsolved problems in physics, such as those currently being investigated at the Large Hadron Collider in CERN; and gain experience in researching and presenting a topic.

I want to attend one of your English language courses: how will you know what my level of English is and what sort of tuition I need?

All students registered to attend our English Language courses will be required to take an English Language Placement Test, which will assess the relative abilities of each student. Students are then placed into ability groups based on the results of their assessment, and the material that they study is tailored to the level of the class.

Once you have booked your place on a course we will send you information on how to take our online Placement Test. This test should take approximately one hour and should be taken by the student at least one month prior to their arrival date.

Please note that Oxford Royale Academy English courses do not cater for beginners in English.

Can I take more than one course?

It is certainly possible to take more than one course and combine a variety of study programmes. This can be done in two ways:

  • Enrol on two different programmes. For example, you may wish to have two weeks on the Broadening Horizons course and then two more weeks on the Oxford Enterprise Programme.
  • Enrol on the same programme twice, but choose different subject options. For example, you may wish to have four weeks on the New Perspectives course, choosing Creative Writing & Experimental Psychology for the first two weeks, followed by Human Biology and Physics & Chemistry for the second two weeks. Four-week courses include New Perspectives, Broadening Horizons and Oxford Summer English only.

Students staying for two consecutive sessions will be provided with accommodation for the Saturday night, and their campus will provide supervised activities between their first session ending and second session starting. Should you have any queries about how to take more than one course please do not hesitate to contact us.
